In this July 15, 2024, handout image courtesy of Northwestern Medicine, Harry Stackhouse, 74, undergoes kidney transplant surgery at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. "I saw everything": Stackhouse, from Illinois who was awake during a recent kidney transplant, says he felt no pain as he chatted with doctors, eyed up the donor organ before it was implanted, and watched the surgical team staple him back up. Stackhouse was discharged just 36 hours after the procedure at Northwestern Medicine, which is hoping to make transplantations that don't require risky general anesthesia commonplace. Performed in a little over an hour on July 15, it was the second such surgery led by Satish Nadig, director of the Chicago based hospital system's Comprehensive Transplant Center, who's since gone on to carry out a third.
