Liquid droplets formed by a flushing lavatory have been revealed by scientists.
And it backs up childhood parental warnings to close the toilet lid before you flush.
Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder in the USA captured plumes of tiny liquid droplets usually invisible to the naked eye.
They used bright green lasers in the lab to make them visible.
While this was a safe lab simulation using water, any toilet in use can potentially blast out droplets containing dangerous pathogens such as E. coli, norovirus and possibly even coronavirus.
From the experiments, the researchers found that particles can shoot out at speeds of two metres per second to a height of 1.5 metres above the toilet
The droplets settled onto surfaces within seconds, the smaller and therefore lighter particles remained suspended in the air for several minutes.
These smaller particles were less than five micrometres in diameter which is about the thickness of a strand of spider’s silk.
Smaller particles not only float in the air for longer, but can escape nose hairs and reach deeper into the lungs.
Previous studies have shown that the virus that causes Covid is present in human waste, although there's not yet conclusive evidence that it spreads efficiently through toilet aerosols.
